Reader in Material Culture, Hamilton Kerr Institute, Fitzwilliam Museum


Spike teaches on the Hamilton Kerr Institute’s Diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings and his research interests fall into two broad categories – visual perception and artists’ techniques. Research into visual perception includes work on formal connoisseurship of paintings to the classification of technical imagery. Research into artists’ techniques includes theoretical and practical work on pigment recipes. He has particular interest in medieval and early modern painting.

Sharpening Perceptions, an exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, shows early career conservators’ copies of masterpieces.
