‘We are destroying the book of life before reading it’ Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal. Knowing what species exist in the first place is an essential step in conservation – but the natural world is remarkably poorly studied, even though we know humans are causing an unprecedented extinction crisis. Yet much of this book has already been written and is documented in the many millions of specimens tucked away in museums and herbaria around the world. Cambridge’s University Herbarium contains a staggering 1.1M specimens alone.
Come and find out how we are starting to mobilise the information in these records and making them available to the rest of the world.
