Step into the Play Pavilion, an imagination playground for families inspired by nature in art and bursting with creative possibilities. Explore, invent, and play together - let your imagination run wild all summer long, rain or shine!

Where: Front lawn at the Fitzwilliam Museum

When: Drop in anytime between 12pm and 3pm, Tuesday - Sunday, no booking needed from 5 to 31 August 2025.

 

Meet Jeannie Booth and Simon Crowhurst, part of a team at the University of Cambridge that investigates tiny, microscopic fossils to learn about oceans and climate thousands of years ago.

Search for 'microfossils' using our powerful microscopes, and find out how they can tell us about past climates.

Please note, this is a family activity designed for children.

Meet University of Cambridge Earth scientist Julian Pahl, who studies lava from Hawaiian volcanoes to investigate volcanic processes before an eruption. Get hands-on with with some real (cooled!) lava. Explore beautiful lava minerals under powerful microscopes, and find out what it's like to investigate active volcanoes as a job.

Join us at the Polar Museum for the chance to dive deeper into the art of map making and navigation! Get a closer look at the stunning paintings of the Arctic and Antarctic on our ceiling domes and fill in your own versions to take away. While you're here, you'll have the chance to speak to experts about some of the equipment explorers would use to navigate safely in the polar regions and use a new trail to find the objects in the museum. We'll even have a few objects from our handling collection out so you can get a closer look for yourselves!

Come and explore, play, create and have fun with materials in our Creative Studio on the lower ground floor! 

Workshops are free and supported by the Fitz Families team. All materials are included, and the workshops are suitable for children aged 5-12 years with their parents and carers.

When: Activity slots at 10am, 11am, 2pm & 3pm. This is a pre-booked activity lasting 45 minutes.
