Songs in Translation: Love, Longing and Lament across South Asia's Religious Borderlines

Enjoy performances of six historic songs that span over seven centuries and learn about their history and cultural impact alongside images and figures that crossed between traditions - including the Hindavi verses of Amīr Khusrau, the devotional songs of Rabindranath Tagore, the ghazal of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Bengali river songs of Jasimuddin, and Harivansh Rai Bachchan's celebrated Madhushala. The songs are performed in the original languages, and in English translation.

This talk is programmed in partnership with the Cambridge Festival of Islamic Arts, running 19-29 November 2026.
