About Max McCleish
Born in Ilkley, Max McCleish moved to York in 2007. He has been playing music from an early age, starting the piano when he was five, the cello when he was six and the trombone at eight, studying with Ian Davies. He started playing in orchestras soon after, becoming principal trombone with the National Children’s Orchestra for five years from 2008, and was awarded a Leverhulme scholarship with them in 2011. Max has also played in the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra on cello for seven years, holding the joint-principal position in his final two years and playing the Dvorak Rondo in G minor with them on tour in the Czech Republic in 2016. Aside from classical playing Max has a passion for jazz, which he has been studying with Kevin Holbrough since 2014. His big band playing includes playing lead trombone in the York Youth Jazz Orchestra and deputy work with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2016 Max progressed to the category auditions of BBC Young Musician whilst also progressing to the top 20 in the respective jazz award, both on trombone. A lot of his musical influences have come from his time at St. Peter’s School in York where he was a music scholar. Here he had the opportunity to sing in St. Paul’s Cathedral, lead the big band to a platinum award at the National Schools Big Band finals in Manchester and perform Albrechtsperger’s Alto trombone concerto in York Minster. From October 2017 Max will be studying music at the University of Cambridge.

Visitors are invited to sit at the library table in the House at Kettle’s Yard and browse the books, however this is not a lending library.

We welcome artists but only pencils and pads/books size A3 or smaller can enter the House. No wet materials (including pens) or chalks are allowed.
Children who will be carried do not need a ticket. Please note that the House is not suitable for buggies.
