Soon after the Greek Revolution, the Acropolis was cleared of its Medieval buildings. Byzantine icons too were shunned, even in University Museum collections. This lecture touches on icons in the Fitzwilliam but focuses on the fate of one icon in the Yale University Art Museum, acquired in 1871, but hidden in its storeroom until now.
This event accompanies a specialist display at the A. G. Leventis Gallery of Ancient Cyprus (October 2021- June 2022) dedicated to the Bicentenary of the Greek War of Independence. The lecture and display are under the Auspices of the “Greece 2021” Committee.
About the speaker:
Robin Cormack is Professor emeritus in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art and teaches in the Classics Faculty at Cambridge. His most recent book is Byzantine Art in the Oxford History of Art series. He is working on the history of icons at the Monastery of St Catherine at Sinai in Egypt, though currently he cannot get to the Monastery storerooms.
