Dr Alejandra Guerrero, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge

Cambridge University Botanic Garden has a large and diverse collection of plants that show specific colour patterns due to the expression of different pigments such as betalains. These pigments present health-promoting effects thanks to their antioxidant, antitumoral or anti-inflammatory activities. Taking advantage of their great properties implies big spaces to settle a large number of plants and optimal environmental conditions for their growth. However, the interest in these pigments has driven the development of a simple, fast method for their obtention.  In this talk, Dr. Alejandra Guerrero will show how we use biotechnology to produce plant pigments without plants.
