About Julie Mehretu

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1970, and now resident in New York, Julie Mehretu is among the most highly regarded artists working today. A recent painting by the artist, Ghosthymn, was included in the exhibition Actions. The image of the world can be different, which marked the re-opening of Kettle’s Yard in 2018. Julie Mehretu makes large-scale, gestural paintings that are built up through layers of acrylic paint on canvas overlaid with mark-making using pencil, pen, ink and thick streams of paint.

About Dr Aline Guillermet

Dr Aline Guillermet received her PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Essex in 2015. Her research interests include postwar German art, the impact of technology on contemporary painting, and digital art. Her postdoctoral research aims to investigate the ways in which digital visual culture has impacted upon painterly practices since the 1980s. It suggests that contemporary painting offers a critical vantage point from which to reflect upon the changing status of representation and aesthetic experience in the digital age.
