Join Rebecca Roberts, Curator of Gold of the Great Steppe, for a spotlight talk in the exhibition, introducing key themes and highlight objects.

The Saka culture of Central Asia, flourishing 2,500 years ago, is largely unknown outside Kazakhstan. The exhibition will present artefacts from the extraordinary burial mounds of the Saka people of East Kazakhstan. Recent excavations and analyses led by archaeologists from Kazakhstan have helped us understand much better how the Saka lived and travelled, the things they made and what they believed in. They have revealed a distinctive, advanced society, which is still being uncovered as modern archaeological methods enable scholars and scientists to find and analyse not only burial mounds but also the remnants of settlements.

Please note these spotlight talks will take place at the Museum. Booking is free but necessary.

About Gold of The Great Steppe

Gold of The Great Steppe (28 September 2021 30 January 2022) will display an archaeological sensation, hundreds of outstanding gold artefacts recently discovered in the extraordinary ancient burial mounds built by the Saka people in East Kazakhstan.

This exhibition will place archaeological finds discovered in the last three years by Kazakh archaeologists on a global stage for the first time, amplifying voices that often go unheard in museums in the west and giving UK audiences a unique opportunity to see and understand for the first time the rich cultural history of a country the size of western Europe.
