Join art historian Sarah Burles for an online afternoon talk on the artist Winifred Nicholson (1893-1981). The talk will put Nicholson’s work at Kettle’s Yard into a wider context as well as discussing her friendship with Jim and Helen Ede.
The paintings of Winifred Nicholson are some of the best loved works at Kettle’s Yard and a testimony to her lifelong friendship with Jim and Helen Ede. This talk will place these works in the wider context of Winifred’s life and artistic development starting from her early years, her travels with her father, her marriage to Ben, her time in Paris and her life in Cumbria. Jim Ede later acknowledged that it was Winifred who“taught me much about the fusing of art and daily living”. This fusion is at the heart of what he created and shared at Kettle’s Yard, as well as in the work of Winifred herself.
The talk will be recorded and the recording will be sent to all ticket holders after the event. If you are unavailable to attend the live event, you can still buy a ticket and will receive the recording.

Sarah Burles is an art historian and museum educator. Sarah studied History of Art at Cambridge University, before completing a Masters degree at the University of London in museum and gallery education. Sarah has worked in museums and galleries for over 25 years, including at the Fitzwilliam Museum for 12 years. More recently she has led tours for the Art Fund and Art Society, runs adult education courses and works as a Tour Director for ACE Cultural Tours. Sarah’s passion is to make art accessible and enjoyable to a wide audience and her tours and courses aim to be engaging, as well as intellectually stimulating.
